PRP Injections Q & A

What are PRP injections?

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections are a type of regenerative medicine therapy that harnesses your body’s power to heal itself.

PRP occurs naturally in your blood and has growth factors that are essential to new cell growth. Injections of highly concentrated plasma trigger your body to produce new, healthy cells that replace those damaged by disease or injury.

This natural approach to treatment alleviates both inflammation and pain in your soft tissues. Since PRP therapy addresses the underlying cause of your pain, you can expect your pain relief to be long-lasting.

Are PRP injections right for me?

You might be a candidate for PRP injections if you have persistent pain in your joints or soft tissues that aren’t responding to medications or physical therapy.

North Point Orthopaedics offers PRP injections as a nonsurgical solution for:

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Tendon tears
  • Muscle sprains
  • Ligament strains
  • Chronic inflammation

The providers may also use PRP injections to boost your post surgical healing efficiency if you have surgery to repair soft tissue tears or to replace a damaged joint.

To determine if PRP injections are right for you, the physicians spend time reviewing your medical history, your existing health, and the severity of your orthopedic injury.

What happens during PRP therapy?

PRP therapy is a two-part, minimally invasive process, which the North Point Orthopaedics physicians complete in one visit.

To harvest the PRP they’ll use in your treatment, the providers first need to take a sample of your blood at the start of your appointment.

They prepare your blood sample in a centrifuge, a device that quickly spins your blood to separate the needed platelets from the rest of your blood materials. The resulting high concentration of PRP is what the providers inject into your joints or soft tissues.

While you won’t see immediate results, you should notice a significant reduction in pain and an increase in your range of motion in the weeks after your PRP injections. As new cells grow and your soft tissues heal, your results improve further over time.
